The Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board (MPESB, formerly Vyapam) is hiring Jail Prahari (Jail Guard) for the MP Jail Department. This is an executive cadre post. Below you will find the verified vacancy count, eligibility, physical standards, exam pattern and the full selection flow, taken straight from the official MPESB rule book. Jail Prahari was notified inside one combined MPESB notification that also covered Forest Guard (Van Rakshak), Field Guard (Kshetra Rakshak) and Assistant Jail Superintendent. Those cadres carry their own vacancies and standards, so this page stays on Jail Prahari only.

The 757 posts break down by category like this: Unreserved 253, EWS 28, SC 121, ST 151, OBC 204.
Eligibility: Qualification and Age
The minimum qualification is 10th pass (High School) under the 10+2 system, or Higher Secondary under the older system. This is a school-level recruitment. No degree is needed.
Age is counted as on 01 January 2026. The band for general and unreserved male candidates is 18 to 33 years. A 5-year relaxation pushes the upper limit to 38 years for women, for SC, ST and OBC candidates, for government employees and for Nagar Sainik (Home Guard). Candidates from outside Madhya Pradesh may apply only against unreserved posts, and they get no age relaxation and no reservation benefit.
Application Fee
The fee was Rs. 500 for unreserved candidates and Rs. 250 for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates of Madhya Pradesh, with the MP Online portal charge added on top. The window is closed, so this is here only for reference.
Physical Standards for MP Jail Prahari
Physical standards are the body measurements you must clear at the measurement stage. They are mandatory, with no relaxation for anyone. There is no PwD (divyang) reservation for this post.
| Standard | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 165 cm | 158 cm |
| Chest (without expansion) | 83 cm | Not required |
Beyond height and chest, a candidate must have normal eyesight in both eyes, no knock-knee and no flat-foot, and must be medically fit. Anyone who misses the minimum physical standard is out, however strong the written marks are.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
The physical efficiency test is a different thing from the measurement. The PET is qualifying only and carries no marks. It simply checks whether you can finish the run and the throw inside the set limits.
| Event | Male | Female | Ex-serviceman / Home Guard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 800 m run | 2 min 50 sec | 4 min 00 sec | 3 min 15 sec |
| Shot put (gola phenk) | 20 feet (7.260 kg shot) | 16 feet (4.00 kg shot) | 15 feet (7.260 kg shot) |
Three rules matter here. Fail the 800 m run and you do not get to attempt the shot put. In the shot put itself you get up to 3 attempts. The whole test is video-recorded.
Written Exam Pattern
The written exam is a single objective paper, conducted online by MPESB and pitched at high-school level.
- Total questions: 100
- Total marks: 100 (1 mark per question)
- Duration: 2 hours
- Level: High school
- Subjects: General Knowledge, General Hindi, General English, General Maths, General Science
- Negative marking: None. MPESB does not cut marks for wrong answers, so attempt every question.
Selection Process
Selection runs in two stages. The written exam sets the merit, and the physical stage is only a pass-or-fail gate. The order is:
- Stage 1: Written exam, online, conducted by MPESB.
- After the written result, candidates up to 10 times the number of vacancies are called for the next stage, by merit and category-wise.
- Stage 2: Physical measurement (height and chest checked against the standards above), conducted by the Jail Department / DG Jail.
- Physical efficiency test (800 m run and shot put), qualifying only.
Final selection and the merit list rest on the written exam marks alone. The measurement and the efficiency test add nothing to your score; they only decide whether you stay in the race. One more thing worth knowing: Jail Prahari is an executive post, so selected candidates are not posted to their home district.
Reservation
Vertical reservation follows the MP norms: ST 20%, SC 16%, OBC 27% and EWS 10%. Horizontal reservation sits on top of that, within each category: women 35%, Nagar Sainik (Home Guard) 30%, and ex-servicemen 10%. Candidates from outside Madhya Pradesh may apply only against unreserved posts and get no reservation benefit.
How to Download the Admit Card
The admit card goes live on the official MPESB website ahead of the written exam. To get it, open esb.mp.gov.in, find the admit card link for the Jail Prahari / combined Jail-Van 2026 exam, log in with your application number and date of birth or password, then download and print it. Carry a printed copy and a valid photo ID to the exam centre. Keep checking the official site, because the exam date for this recruitment has been scheduled and revised more than once.
